It's true, most people when they set up last man standing competitions it's based on the English Premier League... BUT the EPL is not the only league in the world!

It's international weekend this weekend so no EPL, but LMS hasn't come to a standstill as there were games still being played in League 1 and League 2 of the EFL.

The English Football League is far more than just a feeder to the Premier League. It’s a rich and varied competition that captures the essence of English football: community, history, competition, and passion. For fans of the game, the EFL represents football in its purest form—where fortunes change quickly, underdogs prevail, and every match counts.

Whether you're a supporter of a club battling for promotion or a team fighting for survival, the EFL delivers drama, excitement, and heart-stopping moments that remind us why we love football. It’s not just the stepping stone to the Premier League; it’s the beating heart of English football.

That was made clear this weekend when Swindon managed to equalise in the 98th minute against Barrow to secure a draw with literally the last kick off the game, no doubt forcing some exits from LMS.

Lastmanstanding.club has now made it easier for admins to set up EFL leagues as all English Football League teams have been added to the predefined teams section.

It was on this day in 1888 that the first league fixtures took place with the 12 founding teams. Which of those would you back for LMS next weekend?

In the world of football, the phrase "home advantage" isn't just a catchy saying; it's a well-documented phenomenon that has a profound impact on the outcome of matches. These are the various factors that contribute to this powerful phenomenon and why you should always pick a home team in last man standing!

Familiarity with the Environment

One of the most obvious advantages of playing at home is the familiarity players have with the pitch. Every stadium has its own unique characteristics, be it the quality of the grass, the dimensions of the field, or the nuances of the weather. Home teams are accustomed to these variables, allowing them to fine-tune their strategies and play with a level of comfort that visiting teams might struggle to match.

For example, some stadiums are known for having a particularly slick or slow pitch, which can affect how the ball moves. Home players, who train on this surface regularly, are more adept at adapting their style of play to these conditions. This familiarity reduces the element of unpredictability and increases the home team's efficiency during the game.

Support from the Home Crowd

The psychological boost provided by the home crowd cannot be overstated. Fans are often referred to as the "12th man" for a reason, they can influence the game's momentum with their support. The roar of a home crowd can be intimidating for visiting teams, creating a hostile atmosphere that heightens pressure and can lead to mistakes.

Conversely, this same crowd energy can uplift the home team, spurring players to push harder and perform better. In close matches, the encouragement from thousands of loyal supporters can make the difference between winning and losing.

Reduced Travel Fatigue

Football teams often have to travel long distances to play away games, which can lead to fatigue and disrupt their usual pre-game routines. Traveling involves not just the physical act of moving from one place to another but also adapting to different time zones, climates, and living conditions, all of which can affect performance on the field.

Home teams, on the other hand, enjoy the luxury of sleeping in their own beds, following their usual routines, and experiencing minimal disruption to their daily lives. This comfort and consistency allow players to be in peak condition both physically and mentally, providing a significant edge over their travel-weary opponents.

Tactical and Strategic Advantages

Coaches and players often utilise their home stadium's unique characteristics to their advantage. Knowing the exact dimensions and quirks of their pitch allows them to devise and practice specific tactics that can exploit these features. For example, if a team is accustomed to playing on a narrower pitch, they might develop strategies that make it difficult for opponents to spread the play, forcing them into congested areas where the home team excels.

Additionally, home teams are more familiar with the local climate and can tailor their training sessions to match the expected conditions on game day. This foresight gives them an upper hand in situations where weather becomes a factor, such as extreme heat, cold, or humidity.

Psychological Comfort

Playing at home offers a sense of security and confidence that is difficult to replicate in away games. Athletes are creatures of habit, and having a consistent, comfortable environment can enhance their mental state. The psychological comfort of being in familiar surroundings, supported by friends and family, can reduce stress and anxiety, allowing players to focus entirely on their performance.

This mental edge is particularly crucial in high-stakes matches, where the pressure to perform is immense. A calm and focused mind often leads to better decision-making, composure under pressure, and ultimately, superior performance.

Referee Bias

Though referees strive to be impartial, studies have shown that subconscious biases can sometimes favour the home team. The influence of the home crowd, whether through vocal support or pressure, can lead to more favourable decisions for the home side. While this is not a factor that teams can control, it is one that they can benefit from when playing at home.

In football, the advantage of playing at home is a multi-faceted phenomenon, combining physical, psychological, and strategic elements. From the comfort of familiar surroundings to the uplifting energy of passionate supporters, home teams have several factors working in their favour. While talent, strategy, and preparation are vital components of success, the home advantage is a unique and powerful element that can tip the balance in favour of the host team. Understanding and leveraging this advantage can be the key to turning tight games into memorable victories.
